Prison healthcare criticised in new report

A new joint report by the Healthcare Commission and the Chief Inspector of Prisons has stated that healthcare in prisons in England is “not good enough”. The report comes after large scale changes in the management of prison healthcare which has seen the NHS taking responsibility for prison healthcare services.

Concern over local maternity unit closures

New NHS figures obtained under the Freedom of Information Act by Shadow Health Secretary Andrew Lansley show a sharp rise in the temporary closure of maternity units during 2008. The total number of closures was up 38% from 2007, with 553 closures this year compared with 402 in 2007. Such closures result in mothers to be having to go elsewhere, sometimes resulting in travelling to alternative maternity units many miles away.
