Family mediation

The Mayo Wynne Baxter Family Team can draw on the knowledge and experience of accredited family mediators who are trained to use a process of mediation to resolve complex family law issues including divorce and separation, maintenance and issues regarding children and property.

Family law mediation is a process by which an impartial third party, the Mediator, facilitates a discussion between a separating couple, enabling them to reach an agreement suitable to their situation. The agreement may be about children, or finances and property, or both. Family mediation is not reconciliation and it is not counselling.

The mediation process is intended to enable the couple to solve their problems together, rather than some other person telling them what they should do. Mediators do not make decisions or provide solutions for the couple. Instead, the role of the mediator is to help the couple reach consensus, to facilitate open and free discussion and to ensure that any proposals are realistic.

What are the benefits of mediation?
